Highland Haven Flood News Update

10/18/2018

Many thanks to everyone who has and is helping our neighbors recover from this flood.  Your efforts are greatly appreciated.  Thanks to everyone who;

  • opened and stocked the Community Center for emergency shelter operations,
  • helped pack and transport residents needing assistance to safety, and,
  • Special thanks to everyone helping residents and property owners with cleanup efforts.

These actions really define and celebrate our community spirit!

Many Highland Haven residents and property owners were impacted by the recent flood.  Below are answers to Frequently Asked Questions we have fielded at City Hall.

  1. All property owners of waterfront lots need to immediately review the condition of their homes, waterfront structures and watercraft. We know of approx. 30 homes that received water damage and virtually all waterfront structures (docks) received some type of damage.  Many watercraft are missing or have been grounded.
  1. The flood had no impact to our water system. Our licensed operator has been and continues to monitor our system.  If you find any leaks, please notify City Hall immediately.  Any leaks after the meter are the responsibility of the property owner and must be repaired immediately so our system is not compromised.  The City Hall phone number is 830-265-4366 and it is answered 24 hours.  All water emergencies are relayed immediately to our licensed water operator.
  1. Property owners must apply for a building permit for any repairs or construction. Our Building Permit Officer, Alvin Kahanek, will be happy to review your scope of work and determine whether a permit is required and what type of permit is necessary.
  1. Property owners need to review Ordinance #51 prior to starting flood repairs to homes and structures in the floodplain.
  1. The City is in contact with the County to determine how debris will be handled. Many home owners and their contractors are coordinating their own dumpsters for now.  In some cases neighbors are sharing the costs for a dumpster.  Do not block streets or access to other homes.  We will provide more information about debris as we get it.
  1. Temporary “POD” type storage units may be used; however, they must be located on your driveway. Do not block streets or access to other homes.
  1. We have been in contact with the Sheriff’s Office and the Constable’s Office requesting close patrols. Residents should immediately report any suspicious activity they observe to the Sheriff’s Office.
  1. Please take time to say thanks to all of the first responders that supported us during the flood operations.
  • Granite Shoals Fire Department
  • Marble Falls EMS
  • Burnet County Sheriff’s Office
  • Burnet County Constable’s Office
  1. Also pass along thanks to our County Judge, James Oakley, and our County Commissioner, Jim Luther, as well as, all of the Burnet County leadership working in the Emergency Operations Center during this flood event.
