A Call for Highland Haven Alderman Candidates!

We have 4 of our 5 Board of Alderman (BOA) positions that must be filled by election this year.

Three positions are 2 year terms and one position is limited to one year.  The BOA terms are typically staggered; however, last year one position had to be filled by BOA appointment.  By State Law, an appointment term is limited to the next regular municipal election.

As an incorporated city, we have responsibilities established by the State to manage the governmental activities and services performed by the city to support the citizens of Highland Haven.  As a Type A city, we are required to maintain a full Board of Alderman.

What happens if we don’t fill the positions?

If 2 or more positions are unfilled, a city is required by State law to hold a special municipal election.  Special municipal elections are very expensive and a city bears all of the costs associated with a special election.  Cost estimates for a special municipal election are in the range of $4,000, a cost we need to avoid.

First day to file for a position on the BOA ballot is January 18, 2017 and the last day to file is February 17, 2017.  Election Day is May 6, 2017

BOA applications/information can be picked up at City Hall starting January 3rd.

Who is eligible?  State Law requires the following qualifications.  A candidate must:

  1. Be a United States citizen
  2. Be a resident of Texas for at least 12 months as of the deadline for filing for office
  3. Be a registered voter
  4. Be a resident in Highland Haven for 6 months prior to Election Day.
  5. Be a minimum of 18 years of age upon commencement of term
  6. Not have been convicted of a felony
  7. Not have been deemed mentally incompetent

Most Highland Haven citizens will agree that the primary reason they choose to live here is due to the “quality of life”.  Service to our community is a responsibility of all citizens whether participating as a voting member of the community, a volunteer and/or serving as an elected city official.  It is important that every citizen does their part to preserve the “quality of life” we expect in our community.

Consider volunteering your time and expertise for your city!
